Is 30 The New 50?

Published by deleasa at 3:27 am under Uncategorized Edit This

For many years, when I heard the phrase “midlife crisis,” it was associated with reaching the milestone age of 50.  Significant physical, mental, and emotional changes haven taken over by then, as well as making certain changes in the midst of the crisis in order to remain as youthful as possible.  I’ve noticed more these days that the midlife crisis feels like it’s occurring much earlier in life.  There is an overwhelming sense of feeling unfulfilled or even like a failure for not measuring up to the magic list of life goals that were written during the teens and early 20’s.  Back then it probably seemed like we had enough time and there was no reason why we couldn’t achieve most of the goals between the ages of 30-35.  Fast forward 10-20 years, you glance at the list before you and staring back is the realization that the list and your life don’t match.   You do not have the dream job, you are still single without children, or you have children but not married, divorced, not the owner of your own home, or still have yet to get a bachelors or Masters degree.  There are many reasons and even excuses as to why you have yet to fulfill your dreams.  Life happens with all it’s unforeseeable roadblocks and detours; it doesn’t always follow the perfect plan that we’ve dreamt of as a child.  Lists are not written in stone or blood, so goals can be changed at any time.  They are merely meant to hang our ideal goals that we would like to aim towards.  As long as you still have time, any attempts made to achieve them are still better than not at all.  I would like to believe that the opportunity still exists and that it’s up to me to choose to take the necessary steps to achieve them, no matter how long it takes.  It’s easier to kick yourself while you are down, compare what your friends may have accomplished, or allow the voices in your life to talk you out of going for it after all these years. Even if success has not happened in all things, I want to hold on to the belief that if it is meant to happen, then it will.  It just might take a little while longer than I would have liked.  More than anything, it is important to hold onto your faith, stay positive, and continue to press forward towards your goals.  At least that’s what I keep saying to myself.
